Pete and Magic
Magic and Shyla
Jennifer bought Magic from Mar
Vista Stables where she had been
using him as a lesson horse.  No
one knows what's Magic's
history is, but he is a wonderful
mover and a talented jumper.
Pete shared a pasture with Magic
and Prancer while he was
recovering his health.  Magic is
now the love of Fancy's life.
Well!  That's what Magic
thinks of that!
These are the
before pictures and
they were taken
after Pete had been
at Millwood for a
month and had
already put on
about a hundred
pounds.
Here are the after
pictures; can you believe
the difference?  Pete is so
happy.  This was the
first time Pete and Magic
had been turned out in
the arena.  For me, it
was like sending a little
kid off to school for the
first time.  I was worried
that his tendon and
ligament hadn't healed
enough yet.  He was fine
and enjoyed showing off.
Pete can definitely trot!

Mr. Pete's first ride.

After ground driving Pete, I
hopped on him!  He thought
the long drawn out process of
introducing a rider to him was
dumb and it wasn't until I
actually got on that he was
happy.  We just walked in the
round pen today; he still
needs to build back strength.
Despite the high winds, he
was solid as a rock.  I've
started him in a hackamore to
teach him steering with out
worrying about his lack of
molars and crooked jaw.
Update on Pete: April 7, 2008
These pictures are from the Mark Rashid clinic in
Visalia.  Pete was amazing.  I had been riding Pete
in a KK Ultra but the third day of the clinic,
Mark put a Myler bit in his mouth and he was
much more solid.  The bridle that the bit was
attached to was one that Mark was given by "the
old man" from his books.  If you never read the
book, Considering the Horse, I strongly urge you
to.  It is an amazing book.  All of Marks books
are more than worth the time to read.  Mark
really liked Pete and I really learned to connect
with him.  Crissy showed me how to teach Pete to
stand at the mounting block and I can't wait to try
it with Spitfire even though she's not yet three.  It
was like dancing with Pete.  Just as a random
note, I had only ridden Pete about 20 -30 times in
the year he's been under saddle.
At some point in Magic's life, his
left ear was so severely damaged,
he no longer has a full range of
motion left in it.  The large lump
at the base is scar tissue from
the damaged cartilage, tendons
and ligaments.  Needless to say,
he's had trouble accepting his ear
being touched.  The very first
day of the clinic, Mark was able
to touch the ear, by the third
day, Magic was asking people to
touch his ear.  Jennifer and I
both were crying.
This was the first day of the clinic.
Jennifer's never been able to touch Magic's
ear like this before.
Jennifer worked on the
ear-work with Mark in the
first hour and riding with
Crissy in the second
hour.  She discovered
that when she relaxes her
arms and hands, Magic
relaxes his head and
neck.
